Post One - Who Am I?

I've never been great at introducing myself, but from my past experience with writing blogs in high school, I guess I should start with my name. My name is Kirsten Emelia Darel-no, it's not "Kristen", or "Keerstin" - just Kirsten. I'm 18 years old, making me a legal "adult", although I don't feel like one. I come from a small town in Southern Ontario called Leamington. Don't worry, I won't be offended if you've never heard of it. I went to a Catholic high school for four years, and although I've been told they were supposed to be the best years of my life, I'm definitely glad to be out of there.

Leaving home was a bit of a challenge for me. It's not that I can't handle responsibility, and it's definitely not that I'm afraid to be independent. I've had a boyfriend for almost four years and leaving him behind was probably the toughest thing I've ever had to do. After much thought and consideration, I realized that I needed to put myself first and focus on my future. My future is something that needs to be certain, while relationships can come and go.

I'm here at Laurier with a goal; a goal to learn and become successful some day. I'm in the Journalism program because I have always loved writing, and being involved in the news and sharing it with other people is exciting to me. I'm not sure which strand of journalism I want to get into yet, but as of right now, I'm leaning towards print or broadcast. So far, I'm enjoying most of my classes and they don't seem too difficult. Then again, it's only been one week. I guess the only problem I've had is somehow managing to miss a reporting and writing lab by accident. It's pretty frustrating because I don't normally forget things like times and places. It wasn't exactly how I pictured starting off my week, but with the luck I have, I guess I should have expected it.

I don't exactly know what topic to talk about for my blog. I'm thinking I will most likely end up blogging about creative writing or cooking: two things that I am fairly interested in and good at.
